X-Men Anime – First Impressions

I’m 3 episodes into the X-Men anime and I thought I’d write my first impressions post before I catch up on the more recent episodes released. The anime has a definite 90’s flavour that is very nostalgic and done better than in the Ironman anime. The music, the action, the animation reminds me of the good old days of Saturday morning cartoons.

Without spoiling too much, the anime starts out with a mushy scene involving Jean Grey in Phoenix mode and most of the cast in which she begs “Scott” (Cyclops) to kill her. If you don’t already know I despise Cyclops and unfortunately I’m told that the Japanese adore the girly bastard. Pretty soon the entire X-Man gang of Beast, Storm, Wolverine and Cyclops is summoned by Professor X and hitch a ride to Japan to investigate why mutants are disappearing. They uncover something sinister and so begins the adventure.

I’d don’t “love” the X-Men anime but I do find it interesting enough to want to watch more of series. The voice acting and high tempo music is well done but I can already identify an annoying character or two that will prevent me from enjoying this series as long as “she” is on screen, Storm on the other hand should be impregnated by me any day now…More when I finish watching the series and do a review. Have you been watching the X-Men anime? Let me know what you think in a comment below!

  1. Wouldn’t mind checking this out if I noticed it here. You hate Cyclops? Ah, dude. I like him because it seems in the States everyone loves Wolverine. Cyclops barely gets any love despite being the team leader.

      1. Ah, lame about girlifying Cyclops. But no way Wolverine is the best, man! It’s because they make him to be the best! It’s the Sephiroth effect – make a character who’s a total badass and everyone loves ‘im.

  2. The show is entertaining as it has a little touch of an X-files feel to it.

I’ve always enjoyed John Byrnes Hellfire Club lead up to Dark Phoenix. Really didn’t dig Kitty Pryde and her growth as an Xmen. but both those elements are kinda in this series in a anime way.

  3. The anime has definitely infused a lot of Japanese culture into the X-Men, particularly with Cyclops. Just watch ANY anime and tell me which male character is not girlified in it. While I wouldn’t necessarily agree with their portrayal of Cyke’s personality, I am nonetheless intrigued by the direction the series has taken. There is clearly a more Astonishing X-Men feel about this series with the cameo that Professor X plays. This is infinitely better than the route that the Wolverine and the X-Men series took in capitalizing on Wolverine’s bad-ass popularity. Still, it is entertaining enough to warrant me watching the entire series without wanting to gouge my eyeballs. The addition of the Hellfire Club really brought out the extra dimension for an oft-underutilized aspect of the comics.

  4. i watched first two episodes, and i was like “wow, it’s cool”. I was thinking that making anime from marvel universe is not good idea (no, i’m not anime ahter, i love anime). And then i watched third episode. I was hoping that anime creators are going to make it a bit dark, like ’92 animated series was, but when i saw Hisako’s powers, i passed. It’s definetly too japanese, too “sweet”. It doesn’t fit to x-men.

  5. Watch all twelve episodes and tell me if it’s dark enough for you. I DID and I love it.

  6. i personally like how the characters were drawn..and emma is so hot.. \m/
..they’ve added Japanese tastes in the series but its ok…either way the anime is great..
..i’ve watched the 12 episodes..and i want more from the series..
..magneto now is the enemy..and come to think of it..jean is still alive..judging from those simultaneous telepathic helps she lend to the x-men..she’s hot too.. xD
..it’s not must watch..but hey, try it.. 🙂
