No, it’s not alcohol, or drugs (I think). It’s a kind of liquid, a beverage that melts your stresses away and refuels you with its little chewie bits. It’s sweet enough but most importantly not carbonated (I am president of the anti-carbonated beverage club). For me, it costs 140 yen a hit and I am forced to buy one can at a time because the one time I bought a case I inhaled the whole box in one weekend. It’s available at a vending machine 200m from my house and I may or may not have gone to buy some at 3 am in knee-high snow. There are also rumours of a potential international incident because every machine I checked near Imabari Castle was out of the most addictive substance in Japan.

Aloe x White Grape
The most addictive substance in Japan is the aloe and white grape juice by Minute Maid. One part aloe vera chew bits, one part white grape juice and ten parts secret additive substance. If you are reading this, help me please, my apartment is swimming in spent cans of the stuff and the vending machine speaks to me each time I walk/drive by. If you are a fellow addict, um I mean consumer – please get in touch via a comment below or tweet me @Jamaipanese.

It’s also one of my favorite drinks!
It’s so gooooood. I haven’t had one in a couple weeks but I will change that soon.
Minute Maid drinks are so delicious, I would love to try this as I’ve only had their orange juice and it’s delicious!
Its getting warmer and I am looking forward to inhaling 2 to 3 cans of these daily
