I have said it already many times how the Pokemon franchise was a pillar of my childhood. While many “ageing” millennials pick up pitchforks when any changes are made to their beloved franchises, I have accepted that in the world of capitalism and consumption, that thing you loved when you were younger will be remixed, repackaged and resold to a new audience whether you like it or not. This is the case with Pokemon, Star Wars, LOTR etc. Remember Pokemon Go? I thought I’d never stop playing that addictive nostalgic rollercoaster of a game, but when it started to feel like a job and dialled up the FOMO to 9000 because I had to catch this Pokemon at this time at this place or else? I stopped playing because… WTF Pikachu!

Here we are again, it’s the end of 2024 and Pokemon TCG Pocket recently launched for phones. Guess who has been caught: hook, line and sinker on the nostalgia train again? Yours truly. Queue the Pokemon anime intro music – “I WANT TO BE THE VERY BEST, LIKE NO ONE EVER WAAAAASSSS….”
