Living While Black, in Japan has its own challenges, but they don’t include fearing for your life. That’s how I would write a one-sentence synopsis of a recent NPR documentary about living in Japan as a black person. Though it is focused on the African-American experience it was still such an informative watch. To see people that look like me sharing their own relatable experiences in Japan has somewhat helped me to heal from my own bad experiences in the US and knowing I was targeted by police in Japan the last time I visited Tokyo. The filmmakers interviewed three women and three men. They asked them how their encounters with police and racism in the U.S., played into the decision to leave the U.S.
