Recently, I collected two Goshuin (shrine stamps) at Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine on the grounds of Hiroshima Castle the morning of my graduation from Hiroshima University to mark the day and, complete my first Goshuincho (Stamp Book) and wrap up that chapter of my life. I got this stamp book at Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, six years ago during a trip to climb Mount Fuji. Of the two stamps I got at Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine; one Goshuin was the regular standard issue and the second one was special limited edition carp theme stamp. I also made a YouTube short of me making my way to the shrine and on the grounds.

Carp theme at Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine
In Japanese folklore, the carp (koi) symbolizes courage, strength, success, perseverance, and good fortune due to a legend where a carp that swims up a waterfall transforms into a dragon. Working on my degree at Hiroshima University certainly felt like swimming up a waterfall at times, so the Carp theme of this shrine was fitting for my personal achievement and graduation day. Check out the Shrine’s (website) and visit the grounds of Hiroshima Castle if you are ever in the area.
