Doraemon: Story of Seasons – Fantastically Fun Farming

I recently bought Doraemon: Story of Seasons for the Nintendo Switch after playing the demo. I bought and play the Japanese version using it as a language learning tool. I considered getting Animal Crossing: New Horizons which is all the rage right now. It is a great game but has too many social elements for my liking so I opted for the contained experience of Doraemon: Story of Seasons instead.

Doraemon: Story of Seasons

Better than the Original remake

I played a lot of farming games on handheld devices in the past with the Harvest Moon series being my favourite. We never talk about the Farmville Facebook game addiction that swept the world for those old enough to remember. Doraemon: Story of Seasons is literally a harvest moon re-skin with Doraemon characters and elements added. I think the graphics and audio are better than the more recently released Harvest Moon Story of Season remake also available for the Nintendo Switch.

I’ve been gaming in Japanese recently with Sekiro and Monster Hunter (I just beat Ghost of Tsushima while editing this post) but after playing the demo of this game I really liked that it actually used simple Japanese because it is targeted at kids. It also has furigana for more complicated Kanji by default. I already shared some of the vocabularies I came across while playing the demo and the full game is giving me all the farming-related vocabulary I might never use but also a lot of reading practice. I can only understand about half of what I read and it is admittedly exhausting at times but I play with a dictionary app on my phone and make notes as I go in my Japanese journal.

Doraemon: Story of Seasons Tips and Advice

I am currently only in my 2nd year of playing but if you do end up playing Doraemon: Story of Seasons, in whatever language, my advice is to take it easy for the 1st year. Use the time to understand the game mechanics as many crops will be unavailable. Get used to the seasons and festivals and get to know the NPC characters in the game. Year two is when you should start taking things seriously. Doraemon: Story of Seasons is a fantastically fun farming game that is available in English as well for those who like these kinds of games.
