The Demon in the Teahouse – Book Review

The second book in the Samurai Mysteries series is The Demon in the Teahouse. It picks up right after the exciting happenings of the first book which I reviewed called The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn. After enjoying the first book so much I was hoping the second book would be just as good if not better and fortunately I was not disappointed.

Learning about Geisha

The first book was as good a lesson on 17th century Japanese history and culture as it was an engrossing story. That story was very heavy with samurai references but the Demon in the Teahouse changes gears and focuses more of on Geisha who are traditional, female Japanese entertainers whose skills include performing various Japanese arts such as classical music and dance. 14 year old Seikei picks up where he left off in the first book along with his adopted father, master,  mentor and famous samurai Judge Ooka. Together they investigate the mysterious deaths of a number of Geisha along with some strange fires in Edo the former name of the Japanese capital Tokyo.

Unpredictable Ending

The ending of this book is even more unpredictable as the first as the culprit for the murders and crimes is someone you could never have imagined. Seikei goes undercover as a teahouse attendant keeping guests in line but has his own minor problems and little adventures that all coincide and interlink with the overall story. The pacing and writing is once again top notch and as all good books should do absorbs the reader into it’s world and paints out the actions of the characters in the mind of the reader. A definite read for mystery and Japan fans of all ages.
