Robot Menagerie – pictures on bbc.com

The “in pictures” section has once again been updated with something of interest to me so I decided to share.

Japan is at the forefront of robotics research. Engineers in the country have created hundreds of robots for everything from entertainment to mine clearance. One of the pioneers of robotics in Japan is Professor Shigeo Hirose at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He has been working in robotics for 35 years. His lab is crammed with prototypes and designs for robots that can walk, crawl, swim and jump. Professor Hirose has now spent more than half his life building robots and has won more than 20 prizes for his designs. He is recognised internationally as a pioneer in his field. But, he says, there are still many more things he would like to do. I have so many dreams about robots that have still not been realised.
