Next – an unexpectedly good film

Firstly, I hated Mr. Cage’s last film Ghost Rider. I think that they made a mockery of a perfectly good film license and could have made a more deep film, but instead they went will the age old love story happily ever after crap. Yes it was successful (i think) but anyway this about the film Next. Went to the theatre with no idea in the world what was showing, it was my girlfriends birthday on Wednesday and a trip to the movies was a part of the night’s festivities. Quite frankly I don’t even remember what five films were showing clearly at the theatre, but all I know it was a choice between this or Mr Bean…so you should understand my choice.

Firstly, Next is a science fiction film based on the science fiction short story “The Golden Man”. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel. Cris Johnson (played by Nicolas Cage) was born with an incredible, if somewhat limited, superpower that has tormented him for years, namely, the ability to see two minutes into the future.

This film is kinda “different” but with lots of familiar elements and the twist of the love story plus engrossing action scenes are what makes it a good film in my book, but what keeps it from being great is that it is loosely tied together and almost unprofessionally written. Very little is said about the main characters past, for a guy that sees the future he would be permanently hooked up to a machine in my lab, how does he manage to escape his childhood torment? and how did this robot acting agent find him? and where did these mysterious foreign terrorist come from trying to blow up Las Vegas with a stolen Russian bomb? well at least they not Muslims eh?

I’ve already said too much, don’t want to spoil the experience for anyone, it is worth the movie ticket, probably I need to read the book to better understand the film, or a comment from a visitor will enlighten me.
